Long gone are the days when video game players were criticized for their passivity in front of the computer or on the couch with controller in hand. On the one hand, games like Fortnite have become the equivalent of university sports in certain American faculties, when members of professional video game teams train like high-level athletes. On the other hand, titles like Pokémon Go or Harry Potter: Wizards Unite push players outside of their homes.
Tommy Monkhouse is the perfect illustration of this paradigm shift for video games. In a documentary visible on theNiantic YouTube channel, Pokémon Go development studio, we see the student telling his story, and especially his weight loss.
He began his adventure in the game for a first 3-hour outing, he says, when he had told his mother that he was going for a 20-minute walk.
And it was by maintaining a daily walking pace that he managed to lose 63 kilos in 12 months. He describes how the game allowed him to regain good physical condition. He specifies in particular that Pokémon hunting was particularly motivating for him and that it was much easier for him to walk with the game on his mobile than to do any other physical activity.
According to Tommy Monkhouse, having recorded a maximum weight of 158 kilos in the past, Pokémon Go has been the best sports coach possible. He continues to play to, apart from improving his Pokémon collection, keep his new line with which he says he feels much more comfortable.
What about your side? Do augmented reality video games like Pokémon Go make you walk more than usual?
