Apple Watch now detects illnesses before the doctor

Presented during WWDC 2024,the Vitals application created a surpriselast June. This new feature in watchOS 11 promises to easily track our biological markers and provide us with an overview of our health.

In July, the vice-president of Apple Health told us more about how it works. In particular, he encouraged us towear our Apple Watch while we sleepfor a more precise analysis of our basal metabolism.

Today, the first user feedback seems to confirm the effectiveness of Vitals. Several testimonies report detection of illness even before the appearance of symptoms.

Vitals knows when you are sick

On Reddit, several users share their experience with Vitals. RCG21 says: “I started using Vitals as soon as it was released in beta. Since then, I have fallen ill twice. Both times, the app knew a few days in advance, when I didn't feel anything unusual. »

Another user, dalethomas 81, posted a screenshot of his Vitals data. It shows several metrics going out of the usual range several days before he felt sick. He shares

I woke up today feeling woozy. Now that evening is coming, I feel that old familiar feeling in my head. I'm sick, he comments.

Amazing precision, but not unstoppable

Some users even report that the application detected “out of norm” values after being vaccinated, even though they were not yet experiencing the associated symptoms. TizianosBoy testifies:

My watch knew I wasn't at my best after my COVID and flu shots. All three measurements (wrist temperature, heart rate and respiration) were out of norm. That's how I knew it wasn't right, it's crazy.

While many users praise Vitals' accuracy, experiences vary. At least one user in the thread mentions that the app did not detect their illness in advance, suggesting that individual results may differ.

Apple reminds that Vitals is not intended to replace medical care. The tool is intended to provide a plus, which benefits not only users/patients, but also doctors by sometimes facilitating treatment, thanks to the data collected.

As a reminder, the new Apple Watch Series 10 can now detect sleep apnea.
