Why does Apple encourage people to wear the Apple Watch at night?

During WWDC 2024, Apple presenteda new application for watchOS11, the new version of the operating system for Apple Watch. The app is called Vitals, and as the name suggests, it's about health. The goal of Vitals is to easily track your biological markers and provide you with an overview of your current health.

As a reminder, a biological marker, or biomarker, corresponds to any measurable biological indicator/data. The best known are pulse, blood pressure and blood oxygen saturation (SpO2). If you're sporty or regularly check your Apple Watch, you're probably familiar with them.

In a recent interview with CNET, Apple Health Vice President Dr. Sumbul Desai gives us more information on Vitals.

More effective at night

Wear your watch to sleep every night and get a more holistic view of your daily health. With the new Vitals app, you can quickly view your nightly health metrics right on your watch: heart rate, respiratory rate, wrist temperature, blood oxygen and sleep duration.

Vitals establishes a typical range for each of your health measurements collected while you sleep. So you will always know at a glance how your measurements are performing.

In the interview with CNET, doctor and vice president of Apple Health Sumbul Desai explains why Apple insists on wearing the Apple Watch while you sleep. According to the doctor, the Apple Watch, and in particular Vitals, are able to offermuch better analysis during the night. The reason for this is that while we sleep, we are completely inactive. The measurements of the Apple connected watch are therefore much more precise, and allow you to obtaina better overview of your basal metabolism.

During the exchange, the vice-president of Apple Health also adds that Vitals in watchOS 11 does not suggest going to see a doctor when it is not necessary.Keep reading here to learn about the Apple Watch X's next health feature.
