Apple Watch detects illness even before doctors

  • Study tends to prove that Apple Watch can detect Parkinson's disease
  • This, up to seven years before the first symptoms appear
  • The results of this research, however, must be considered with a grain of salt.

According to a new study by researchers at Cardiff University, smartwatches could help diagnose Parkinson's disease up to seven years before the first common symptoms appear. It would even only take one week of compiled data to reach such a conclusion, whereas doctors sometimes have to try several times to arrive at the same result. The only downside, and not the least: the graphics provided by wearables are still far from being unanimously accepted by them.

Today, the most popular model in the world is the Apple Watch. Several editions have been released since 2015, the most efficient to date being the Apple Watch Ultra and its 999 euros. But the manufacturer also offers a more affordable Series 8 (less than 500 euros), as well as a second generation Apple Watch SE from 299 euros. The latter, however, does not include a blood oximeter or temperature sensor, but its price remains unbeatable at Apple since the Series 3 was removed from the shelves.

Other health benefits with the Apple Watch

With an Apple Watch, we can now fight against many other ailments. We know, for example, that thanks to the heart rate sensor integrated under the cover of the device, it is possible to identify arrhythmias to then be confirmed by a specialist. But that's not all, since with this the Cupertino connected watch also knows youwarn in case of too loud noise, to help you combat the risks of hearing loss.

With this, the update to watchOS 10 which will be available in final version this fall also brings new features for mental health. Among these, we can notably cite the case ofregister of emotions, also available on iOS 17.

Prudence

Regarding the ability of connected watches to detect Parkinson's disease, however, the information should be taken with a grain of salt. Indeed, the study carried out by our colleagues from across the Channel must still be validated by peers. What's more, the process involved in its conclusion does not yet seem applicable to everyone at home. However, this is a good sign for potential developers to choose to offer features based on these discoveries in the years to come. Patience…
