Le companyWi-Fi Alliance, which owns the Wi-Fi brand and sets the standards for it, has officially announced Wi-Fi 7.
While Wi-Fi 6E is just starting to become widespread, Wi-Fi 7 is already making its appearance. The announcement was made on January 8 by the consortium, which shares on its blog that“Wi-Fi 7 will see rapid adoption across a broad ecosystem”.
Really useful?
Given the connection speeds we currently have, we could say that the Wi-Fi 7 standard is arriving far too quickly and that there is no need for it. But as stipulatedWi-Fi Alliance, this latest certification responds to a need concerning“new use cases”. Among them, we find virtual reality, augmented reality, or mixed reality headsets, like the Vision Pro announced a few days ago by Apple. Other new use cases include 3D training, video games, remote working, the Internet of Industrial Things, and cars.
In order to meet the requirements of these new use cases, it offers flow rates up tofive times higher than its predecessor. To achieve this, it uses sending and receiving data simultaneously on multiple frequency lines.
Short and medium term adoption
It is estimated that Wi-Fi 7 should be used bymore than 230 million people this year, and that by 2028, this could correspond to almost2.1 billion people. In his announcement,Wi-Fi Alliancefurther specifies that the first to use it will not be the “new use cases” mentioned above, but rather smartphones, computers, tablets, as well as access points.
Concerning the Apple firm, it is certain that the firm will adopt these standards, but we do not know when. It could very well do it from the iPhone 16, or not, you never know what to expect with Apple.
