IPhone users will have nothing to envy to Android in 2024

Using an iPhone has many advantages. But there is one thing that is possible on Android, but that is not on iOS: Sideloading. Indeed, when an application is not available on Play Store, the official Google store, users can install it directly using a .apk file, or through a third-party store. Nevertheless, things will evolve in 2024 since it is more and more obvious that Apple will authorize Sideloading on iOS.

Apple has always been against this practice, evoking the protection of user data. Indeed, apps that have not been verified by the App Store may contain malware. In addition to this, prohibiting Sideloading guarantees Apple that a developer who refuses to pay his commission on transactions cannot offer his app on the iPhone.

But the firm could be forced to end this iPhone locking, because of the EU. Indeed, the application of the DMA or Digital Markets Act, could force the Cupertino firm to change its practices. Recently, Apple also mentioned these changes to be made on iOS, in an official document. And recently, new elements have shown that the firm has already started working on these changes.

Indices in the code of iOS 17.2

Currently, Apple is testing the updateiOS 17.2In beta. And our colleagues from 9tomac indicate that by searching the code of this beta, they discovered a new framework called "Managed App Distribution”. And by analyzing the corresponding API, the media concluded that this new tool would give permission to apps to install other apps. In other words, it is a tool that would allow developers to create competitors from the App Store.

The other discovery of 9TO5MAC is that Apple would also have planned regional restrictions. Therefore, one might think that this feature will only be available where regulation requires: in Europe. But for the moment, caution is in order, pending an official announcement from Apple.

For his part, journalist Mark Gurman (Bloomberg) has also published new information on sidelading. As Macrumours reports, the journalist spoke of a “highly controlled system” which will allow European users to install apps that do not come from the App Store.

Otherwise, to comply with the DMA, Apple will also have to make changes to the payment system. And the EUinvestigationCurrently to find out if this legislation should also apply to Imessage. If this is the case, Apple could be forced to make its interoperable messaging system with competition.
