The iPhone 14 is not welcome on the ski slopes

During the presentation of the iPhone 14, Apple unveiled a new feature calledCrash Detection.Like fall detection on Apple Watch, it is able to identify when a road accident occurs and automatically alert emergency services.

But the system developed by Apple seems too efficient and many false positives have been listed. With the optionCrash Detection, errors appear numerous to the point that some local emergency teams are calling for it to be deactivated.

Accident detection should be disabled

In Minnesota, a state in the northern United States, the problem has taken on a whole new dimension. Rescue forces criticize Apple for triggering automatic calls for people who have fallen while skiing or snowboarding. If, in the majority of cases, falls require medical intervention, the constant influx considerably slows down the standard of these small seasonal towns.

According to Pat Eliasen, the region's sheriff, more than 700 requests misled rescuers and mobilized teams to minor accident scenes. In order to reduce this influx of calls, he is now asking tourists who come to ski in the area to deactivate the option during their stay.

Apple is trying to resolve the problem

To remedy this bug, Apple introduced a special notification in the latest iOS update (16.2) after Crash Detection is triggered. The Apple brand questions users to find out if it was a false positive or not. This large-scale survey should make it possible to refine the conditions necessary for triggering the functionality in the future.

But Apple is not the only company incriminated in this affair. The company Life 360, which offers the same type of service, also emits a large number of false positives. The application is also working on a fix to make the functionality as useful as possible.
