Mac: Apple fixes major security flaw with Gatekeeper

Apple developers have just updated Gatekeeper, thevirtual shield for Macswhich allows “ensure that only reliable software runs“, to fill a security gap. We do not know, at the moment, if clients could possibly have been affected by hackers, but millions of machines were in the sights of the breach before the patch.

The new version of the operating system that fixes the problem is available formacOS 13 (Ventura), pourmacOS 11.7.2 (Big Sur)and formacOS 11.6.2 (Monterey). This has been available for almost a week for the affected devices. Among these, we find in particular the iMac M1 of 2021 or the MacBook Air M2 andles MacBook Pro M2of this year.

How do I check if my Mac is safe?

To find out if your Mac has received the corrective update, you need:

  1. click on the apple menu
  2. click onAbout this Mac
  3. read the version number and match it with another listed above

The risks

Macs that do not have the patch installed are likely to see malware downloaded to their hardware. Of theviruswhich can then, in theory, siphon off users' personal data or demand a ransom for it. It was cybersecurity researchers at Microsoft who discovered the flaw and transmitted the details to Apple. But this does not mean that the American company offers better solutions: we know that computers running Windows are much more prone to malware than macOS.

According to our colleagues fromBleeping Computer, you should also know that the vulnerability in question can even bypasstheIsolation mode. This is a new feature presented to the public this summer and which, normally, protects devices equipped with it against potential cyberattacks. Macs are not the only ones to be entitled to it: we also know that iPhones running iOS 16 can benefit from it, for example to fight against spyware like Pegasus. iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro are compatible.
