Qi2 wireless charging is coming to iPhone 13 and iPhone 14: what it changes

One of the advantages of the latest iPhones, compared to Android models, is that they benefit from Apple's MagSafe technology. MagSafe works like traditional wireless charging systems, but thanks to the magnetic attachment, this wireless charging is optimized. In addition, the mount allows you to take advantage of new categories of accessories that attach to the back of the device.

But future Android smartphones will also have a MagSafe equivalent. Indeed, Wireless Power Consortium (WPC), of which Apple is a member, has published a newwireless charging standard called Qi 2. In collaboration with the Cupertino firm, this consortium has developed a magnetic attachment system similar to MagSafe, which will be accessible to all manufacturers.

For its part, although it already uses MagSafe technology, Apple will also support the Qi2 WPC standard. This one is alreadysupported by iPhone 15and its variants. And in the near future, Qi2 will also be supported by the iPhone 13 and iPhone 14 series. Indeed, as reported by the MacRumours site, Apple is about to release theiOS 17.2 update for iPhoneand in the list of new features mentioned by the firm, there is this support for Qi2 by the iPhone 13 and the iPhone 14.

What is the benefit for users?

A priori, nothing changes for those who already use these iPhones with a MagSafe charger. On the other hand, in the future, if they want to buy a new wireless charger, their choices will no longer be limited to MagSafe certified accessories. Indeed, they will also be able to use Qi2 certified chargers.

For the moment, this new standard is still in its infancy. But by next year, we should see many Android smartphones with features similar to MagSafe, thanks to Qi2. And accessory manufacturers should offer a wide choice of chargers and accessories adapted to the new standard.
