A Mac Pro with 1TB of RAM pushes Chrome to its limits

Jonathan Morrison, youtuberand owner of a 2019 Mac Pro equipped with 1.5 TB of RAM, recently had an original experience to say the least. He had fun counting how many tabs the Chrome browser for macOS would manage to keep open.

He first went up to2,000 tabs openin the Google browser. In this case, his Mac Pro showed memory usage of 75 GB for Chrome. The tester then pushed to 5,000 tabs open simultaneously. At that time, the RAM consumption for the app reached 170 GB of RAM.

After a night without touching the computer, an automatic Chrome tab opening doing the work, Jonathan Morrison discovered in the morning that his Mac Pro had managed to6,000 tabs Chrome open, for 857 GB of RAM used.

At this point, the Mountain View giant's app was unusable. She probably crashed. Despite this, the other applications launched ran perfectly well, including Safari and the screen capture software used in parallel.

The experiment has no scientific aim or any real goal. The author simply stated that he wanted to have fun and test the power of his Mac Pro. However, he said he was surprised by the overall stability despite the extraordinary consumption of Chrome and the browser crash. The other software continued to work without problem, macOS obviously managing the independence of each of them particularly well. Furthermore, the Mac Pro was not heard at any time. So he didn't bat an eyelid either, while his user embarked on a Machiavellian process that ultimately had no consequences... except for Chrome.

Obviously, no one is going to use Google Chrome this way, but it's still a fun experience. It further testifies to thegreat power of the machine, while it is sometimes difficult to realize one's abilities.
