Despite the arrival of RCS on the iPhone, security vulnerabilities still exist

Google and Samsung have launched advertising campaigns specifically for this purpose: to break the monopoly of iMessage on the iPhone. They ended up getting what they wanted when Apple announced last June that the RCS standard was coming to its smartphones withiOS 18.

The arrival of this new communication standard greatly facilitates exchanges between iPhone users and those using Android. The arrival of this feature was also expected to put an end to several security problems encountered with SMS. Although the vast majority of them have disappeared, this is not the case for all. Apple and Google are working together to correct the remaining sticking points.

RCS on the iPhone: no changes on the horizon?

The arrival of the RCSon the iPhone is not a very visible change for the user. The nuance between the green bubbles and the blue bubbles still exist on the iPhone and if the update has brought many improvements, such as sending video, GIFs or animated photos, Apple is not boasting about it, quite the contrary.

In addition to these multimedia options, the arrival of the RCS standard allows iPhones to display a few additional elements, like on iMessage. In particular, it is possible to see the three little dots when a user is writing in a conversation. The user can also have confirmation that the message has been read, with read receipts and delivery notifications.

A standard not yet optimized

But the arrival of this novelty also has a cost, security. If things have moved in the right direction with the introduction of RCS on the iPhone, everything is not yet perfect. End-to-end encryption is not yet present. This is a real defect for the RCS standard.

Apple and Google have assured that they are working together to resolve this security issue as quickly as possible. As a reminder, iOS 18 has been available for a few days on all compatible devices (find the list here).
