Despite its promise of security, the App Store does not convince everyone

  • A macOS app maker tried to study the habits of other Mac developers
  • We learn that the App Store still puts off many of them
  • Artificial intelligence also holds a key place within their content strategy

Setapp, recognized developer of applications for Mac including the famousCleanMyMac X, was interested in the habits of publishers also offering their platforms to Apple owners. During a comprehensive survey, we discovered, for example, that nearly a third do not distribute their solutions on the App Store. This could be explained in particular because the application store requires you to comply with very strict rules, which do not always suit the studios.

As a bonus, the Setapp study tells us thatnearly half (44%, to be precise) of Mac developers have already implemented artificial intelligence into their apps. This obviously echoes the recent successes of ChatGPT, the site published by OpenAI and allowing everyone to test their language model; GPT-3. This is capable of correcting code, answering questions sometimes more efficiently than Siri or even solving mathematical calculations.

The reasons for the discord

Among what pushes developers to turn to third-party stores (like Setapp, which offers a subscription of around ten euros per month to download more than 200 apps), we therefore find the limits of the App Store. This is known for imposing serious barriers to entry, including a 30% commission on all in-app purchases, which are made withle service Apple Paynatively integrated into the Mac andthe iPad.

With this, we know thatApple refuses many applications. This is for example the case of those whose description is not detailed enough, or of beta versions. Of course, we also know that there is no question of accepting fraudulent imitations of other platforms. The question of classification is also taken into account: content prohibited for minors must specify this, otherwise they risk being banned.

Artificial intelligence, why?

And the AI, then? For developers, using it above all allows them to offer better personalized content to users, based on their habits and preferences. Setapp specifies in particular that theface recognitionis also there, for no less than 33% of respondents. Note that Apple already offers its own solution in this area, namely Face ID, available on the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro but also on the most recent iPad Pros.
