The “Matter” standard for connected homes is long overdue

In 2019, big names in the new technology industry such as Apple, Samsung, Amazon and Google announced that they were joining forces to create a more open and secure standard for smart home accessories.

Scheduled to be launched at the end of this year, we will ultimately have to wait until 2022 to see this new standard arrive in our homes, according to the latest announcement from Tobin Richardson, CEO of the Connectivity Standards Alliance. The first accessories could still see the light of day in 2021, Apple for its part having already laid the foundations forthis new standard within iOS 15.

This standard is eagerly awaited by consumers because it should provide a certain ease of use for connected homes. Philips Hue has notably indicated that it will make its products compatible with this standard shortly.

A “normal” delay

The delay is partly explained according to Richardson by the recent arrival of many new players also wanting to have access to the Matter standard. In all, 29 new companies have joined the project, according to the president's words. He explains that“The delay is disappointing, but it’s not a huge shock. What the people behind Matter are trying to do is bold. The goal is to provide an interoperable smart home protocol that allows devices to communicate with each other and share their capabilities. »

For its part, Apple assured that the implementation of Matter should allowthird-party companies to have easier access to voice assistantsbig companies like Siri for Apple, Alexa for Amazon or Ok Google.
