Among the
new features planned for iOS 9, Apple was interested in what is probably
the biggest problem of the iPhone, but more generally of smartphones, I have
called autonomy.
If every year, Cupertino takes care to integrate a little more battery
efficient in its machines, it is however this time on the part
software that this gain in autonomy should occur in particular thanks to
the integration of an energy saving mode.
Thanks to the beta already available, it is possible to test it today
new mode, this is what the Recombu site hastened to do which
gives his first impressions:
Before continuing, it is important to point out that this is
functions tested as part of a first beta version. In others
terms, the tested performances will undoubtedly not reflect what
we will really discover with iOS 9 in the fall. Nevertheless it is a good
indicator.
What is this power saving mode
The objective of this energy saving mode is not to be engaged all the time.
time. It is rather a backup solution aimed at a
user who would see autonomy drop during the day and would like
make sure you can last all day.
Once the mode is engaged in the Recombu settings indicates that the
battery in the top bar turns yellow and thus allows you to know in one
look if the mode is enabled or name.
Obviously, activating energy saving mode has a cost for
the user. Indeed, when active, all the frills like
Parallax effect or animations are automatically cut off. The apps do not
will run more in the background and emails will have to be
synchronized by hand. Remember that this is a solution of
relief.
So how does it work?
To carry out the test, the Recombu journalists had fun loading
an iPhone 6 Plus running iOS 9 at 100%. They then let him live his life
for 24 hours and taking care to look at the screen from time to time to
check the battery level. Then they repeated the operation by activating the
energy saving mode. In either case WiFi and Bluetooth
were active as well as the phone had a SIM card.
Here is the result. In the first case, the iPhone turned off
after 10 p.m.. Proof that Apple still has a lot of work to do
optimize battery management in iOS 9. The good news is
thatwith power saving mode, the iPhone still showed 23% of
battery after 24 hours.
Obviously, this is a single test whose conditions
allow a questionable comparison, but the fact is that the economy mode
energy seems very effective in guaranteeing extended autonomy when the
need arises. It now remains for Apple to work on iOS 9 so that
we need this energy saving mode as little as possible. Whatever he
in itself, it will be interesting to try to compare this result over the
versions d’iOS 9.
