Mark Gurman had alreadypreviously announcedthat theControl center should change drastically following the update to iOS 18. Today, we discovered that it would be possible to reorganize the icons at the top of this interface. What's more, users could create multiple pages of shortcuts, as can already be done with the iPhone's home screen.
TheControl centeris often compared to thenotification bar on Android, or in the macOS menu bar. There is a whole range of options to control certain major parameters of the operating system, such as Wi-Fi connectivity or pairing via Bluetooth. It is also via theControl centerthat the flashlight can be activated, or that a screen recording can be started.
Endless controls on theControl center?
With several pages supported by theControl center, we can imagine that as with the home screen, it may be possible tocreate dozens of rows of icons. For the moment, in any case, it is impossible to be sure: the number of pages supported has not been communicated. With the iPhone home screen, this is limited to fifteen at most. This is more than enough for a large majority of smartphones, but some may require more. This is particularly what we can easilynoticeon the Reddit forum.
To change the commands displayed on theControl centerof iOS 18, it is rumored that a gesture ofdrag/dropwill suffice, on the spot. This is also how the home screen works, under iOS 17 or iOS 16.
It is true that it would be really welcome to be able to add pages and icons to theControl center. This could allow it to compete with mobiles from Samsung or Google in this area, to which the two manufacturers are more than accustomed. For many years now, it has been possible to modify the Android notifications bar, although this possibility only recently arrived on iPhone.
An additional shortcut!
Among the other new features planned, it seems, for theControl centerof iOS 18, Apple would have added a widget linked toApple Music. This is the streaming service from the Apple company. With this new module, users could notably see the cover of the album currently being listened to.
For the moment, however, we have not heard that a shortcut to activate or deactivate theGPSis planned. However, this is one of the options that is sorely lacking inControl centerunder iOS 17. To adjust this setting, you must go to the eponymous app. Which requires more steps.
iOS 18: what awaits us
iOS 18 would be revealed at the same time as macOS 15, during theWorldwide Developer Conference. The event will take place June 10-14 in California, with an opening keynote live on YouTube on the first day. Among the announcements that are expected, beyond a newControl center, it is rumored that the entire design of iOS would be revisited by its developer. The icons could in particular be reminiscent of those of visionOS, according to repeated rumors in the corridor.
iOS 18 will certainly be made available in final version immediately following the conference, in beta for developers. The public beta is expected in mid-July, versusseptemberfor the final version.
Some features of iOS 18 could also be released a little later, until sometime in 2025. We will know more about the official schedule during the keynote.
