The closed system of iOS, as well as the 30% commission that the Cupertino company charges on purchases of virtual goods on apps, are increasingly criticized. Furthermore, Apple is also under increasing pressure from regulators.
While it is already the subject of a European Commission procedure,Apple is also the target of an investigation by the German competition authority. In a press release, it also indicates that among the complaints received, there is one concerning this 30% commission.
The App Store commission is therefore still at the center of the debates. But what you might not know is that some apps are exempt from the App Store rule, which requires developers to go through Apple's payment system (through which the 30% is charged).
One exception: Patreon!
As reported by the site The Verge, the Patreon application, which allows creators to be paid by their fans, does not pay this commission. This can in fact use alternative payment services on which Apple does not make direct debits.
And the strangest thing is that even the boss of Patreon does not know why his application benefits from this exception. In an interview with the site The Verge, Jack Conte, the company's CEO, assures that he has not made a special agreement with Apple.“We have to manage App Store policies and the review process like anyone else”, he indicated.
He doesn't know why Apple allows Patreon to bypass the 30% commission.“A lot of the actual engagement happens on other platforms… So it’s just not the primary behavior that happens on Patreon”, he nevertheless indicated.
And the most surprising thing is that Fanhouse, an app that allows creators to monetize their influences, does not benefit from the same exception. As reported by The Verge, the developer of this application was ordered by Apple to comply with App Store rules before the end of the year.
In any case, this interview with the boss of Patreon comes at a time when more and more apps are offering features to help creators generate income. However, these apps do not benefit from the same advantages as Patreon. Facebook, for example, has decided to create a feature for creators that will highlight the amounts that are taken by the App Store and the Play Store from the revenue generated by their content (such as paid live videos).
