TSMC boss Morris Chang has just made an interesting statement on the progress of the Taiwanese company. He assures that Intel will remain in« the shadow »of TSMC for several more years. The latter lost the contract to manufacture chips for Apple Macs in favor of M series processors, designed by Apple and designed by TSMC.
Since this major change in 2020, Intel is struggling to catch up and the American company has recognized that the M1 and M2 chips are much more powerful than those produced in its factories at the moment. Despite this state of affairs, Intel claims to be able to catch up and overtake its Taiwanese opponent in the coming years.
All is not rosy at TSMC
However, not everything is perfect in the world of TSMC. Boss Morris Chang is the first to recognize this. He assures that increasingly fierce competition as well as growing “geopolitical tensions” would lead TSMC to the “most complicated period in its history”.
In addition to the ever-present risk of invasion of the island of Taiwan by mainland China, thus putting an end to the civil war started between the nationalists and the communists in 1945, TSMC must face a certain protectionism from several nations .
Taiwan's monopoly does not please
The Covid-19 crisis and the shortage of raw materials have allowed major European nations to realize their lack of infrastructure allowing the design of electronic chips on a large scale. Without them, hundreds of thousands of jobs are directly threatened.
The United States, but also the European Union, are campaigning for the birth of national companies responsible for the creation and manufacturing of chips on their soil. On the other side of the Atlantic, TSMC has finally decided tobuild a factoryto meet the demands of the White House. It could be the same in Europe; Berlin is in any case making a lot of efforts in this direction.
