We are now a long way from the few tens of megabytes per second that 3G could achieve. Thanks to current mobile data and Wi-Fi, the speeds now offered by operators are more in the order of gigabytes. We discover an Apple mobile in the top 5, as well as four other devices, but running on the Android operating system.
At Cupertino,the iPhone 14 Pro Max wins. This edition thus reaches more than 130 Mb/s per second in median speed for downloading, compared to around ten times less for sending files. A completely correct score, but surpassed by the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra with respective values of 161.86 Mb/s in installation compared to 16.19 Mb/s in sending. The device is powered by a Qualcomm chip, while Apple has a proprietary processor made by TSMC. But Apple also uses Qualcomm technology for the 5G modem.
Figures to qualify
In second position in the ranking, we find the foldable smartphoneGalaxy Z Fold 4, also published by Samsung. The Pixel 7 Pro is third, followed by the iPhone 14 Pro Max and finally the Galaxy S22 Ultra.
However, these numbers remainto be considered with a pinch of salt: the methodology used by Ookla to arrive at such statistics is specific and will not necessarily be suitable for everyone's use. What's more, it turns out that Apple is lucky enough to offer its proprietary browser on mobile, Safari: it is automatically installed on all iPhones currently available in stores. However, as the manufacturer is also responsible for designing the phone's motherboard, it is likely that joint optimizations between the hardware and software are to the advantage of the user.
Some tips for a faster connection
To try to obtain the most efficient connection speed possible, here are some recommendations (for iOS):
- for roaming and if you have a compatible iPhone, you canforce activation of 5G only, to the detriment of other generations of mobile networks
- in certain cases and depending on your operator, activate ordisable the VoLTE optionfrom the Settings app
- stop background updates from the App Store or downloads in progress from streaming apps (Netflix, Disney+, Spotify, etc.)
- cut your VPN
- prefer 4G or 5G if you are on ADSL, or on the contrary try Wi-Fi rather than mobile data if these are too slow
