The magazineTimeyesterday published an article written by Lisa Jackson, Apple's vice president of environmental initiatives. As part of its programTime 2030which aims to raise public awareness about climate change, the newspaper hopes to act for the planet by the start of the next decade.
In her post, the leader says she wrote to President Nixon at the age of eight to alert him to the situation on Earth. Born according to Wikipedia in 1962, the young woman would therefore have been particularly precocious since the Meadows report came out in… 1972. As a reminder, this was then the first major study to talk about theglobal warming.
Who composes theTime 2030 Committee?
AlongsideLisa Jackson, the newspaper also counts on the comments of several other celebrities within a dedicated committee. Among them, we find in particular the Ugandan activist Vanessa Nakate, the former CEO of Unilever Paul Polman, the president of the Ford foundation -Darren Walker- and Angelina Jolie, actress who needs no introduction. Physicist and epidemiologist Larry Brilliant is also on the team.
To these are also added the Chinese environmentalistMa Jun, known for his investigations into the pollution of rivers in his country. The young Gitanjali Rao, for her part, is already an inventor of innovative solutions including an app to fight against harassment – at only fifteen years old.
Efforts undertaken by Apple
In her article, Lisa Jackson recalls Apple's major objective of becoming a completelycarbon neutral by 2030. According to her, more than a hundred suppliers of the Apple brand have already joined this ambition. This is also one of the heart of the challenge: managing to also reduce the indirect negative impacts of society on the environment,as we recalled in a previous post just yesterday.
Among the changes on the Cupertino side, we can notably cite the recycling program which aims to resell used iPhones.Refurbished, these use componentsselected by a homemade robot, Daisy. Finally, we can also add that the charger has been removed from the boxes of the Apple Watch Series 6 and iPhone 12 to reduce waste. Which, however, does not please everyone, especially since the price of the devices has not been reduced.
