Apple announced support forRCS messaging protocolinNovember 2023. This is the standard already used by Android devices to replace traditional SMS. It offers a more complete service than SMS, similar to iMessage, but with more features.
The introduction of RCS on iPhone was not without pitfalls. Apple initially refused to support it, after Google made an initial request. The refusal was made public, and Tim Cook advised Android users to buy an iPhone to take advantage of iMessage. Korean giant Samsung also asked Cupertino to support RCS, but without success.
When Apple announced support for RCS, it was attributed toEuropean Union DMA. A few months later, an investigation by John Gruber told us thatit was actually China that forced Apple's hand.
The RCS has finally joined the iPhonein iOS 18 beta 2. To benefit from it in France however,it is necessary to be an SFR customer. In fact, Bouygues, Orange and Free are in the process of preparing support.
In order to promote the deployment of RCS on iPhone, Android has just published a video where the Apple smartphone is mentioned.
RCS: the future of messaging?
The promotional video is called “RCS and the future of cross-platform SMS“. It was published on the Android channel, which has 1.03M subscribers at the time of writing. The objective is to show the mainadvanced RCS features, which make it possible in particular to:
- receive a confirmation when your interlocutor has read or received your message;
- inform your interlocutor that their message has been read;
- send messages via Wi-Fi and mobile data;
- share high-resolution files and photos;
- sending images in HD, reacting to messages via emojis.”

The downside of the RCS protocol compared to iMessage is that it is not yet end-to-end encrypted. The advantage is that it is interoperable between Android and iOS.
