Updated September 13, 2022:watchOS 9 is available for everyone.
Just like iOS 16 and iPadOS 16, the new major iteration of watchOS, at number 9, was presented at the WWDC 2022 conference, summarized here. The final version of the software will arrive after the summer, along with a new generation of apple watches.
As we have seen in previous articles aboutd’iOS 16etiPadOS 16, some iPhones and iPads will not be able to benefit from upcoming updates of their respective software. Let's see what the situation is on the Apple Watch side.
Which Apple Watches are watchOS 9 compatible?
Here is the official list of Apple Watches supporting watchOS 9:
- Apple Watch Series SE
- Apple Watch Series 4
- Apple Watch Series 5
- Apple Watch Series 6
- Apple Watch Series 7
First of all, you should know that all watches that supported watchOS 7 supported watchOS 8. The batch includes the Apple Watch 3 (2017) and all Apple Watches released since. With watchOS 9, Apple sets asidel’Apple Watch Series 3. This has already reached its 5th year of update support. In addition, it is powered by an S3 processor32 bits. It is therefore the last watch not to integrate a 64-bit chip. And its RAM is 768 MB, while more recent models have 1 GB of RAM. The Apple Watch Series 3in any case stops at watchOS 8.
If you own a Series 4 or more recent watch, you will certainly have peace of mind until next year, at least.
The watchOS 9 software does not run under Apple Watch Series 3, is this a sufficiently important argument for you to make you buy a more recent model?
