With the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max released in September 2022, Apple introduced a significant new feature:Dynamic Island. This makes the area of the screen located at the level of the Face ID sensors of the iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max, tactile and dynamic.
What is Dynamic Island?
Basically, this rectangle with rounded corners is all black and fixed. But thanks to Dynamic Island, the area can move, expand, display information, all automatically, or following user action.

And a more detailed video of the Dynamic Island, still from Apple, allowing you to better understand how it works:
iOS and several Apple apps use Dynamic Island to display information or place shortcuts there. This is the case with Apple Plans for example. But third-party developers have also gotten into it. Here is a first list of applications taking advantage of Dynamic Island:
iOS system
- Appel :during a call in progress, Dynamic Island displays the spent call time and the waveforms for the voices of each of the interlocutors
- Face ID
- Connected accessories
- Recharge
- AirDrop
- Silent mode
- Mode concentration
- AirPlay
- Tethering
- Countdown
- Screen Recording
- Dictaphone
Audio and video calls
Audio and video calls can use Dynamic Island to notify an incoming call, but also offer shortcuts to answer or reject the call. Many audio and video calling apps are already compatible with Dynamic Island, including the following:
- Apple Phone
- Skype
Navigation
For compatible navigation applications, directions are shown in Dynamic Island. This is the case for the following applications:
- Apple Plans
- Google Maps
Streaming audio
Most audio content streaming applications (music, podcasts, books) take advantage of Dynamic Island to display the title of the content being played, the cover art of the song being played, or even the waveform of the audio being played. Additionally, if your iPhone is connected to a third-party streaming system, such as HomePod, the corresponding icon will also appear in the Dynamic Island. Here are some audio streaming apps that take advantage of Dynamic Island:
- Apple Music
- Spotify
- YouTube Music
- Audible
- Overcast
- Amazon Music
- Soundcloud
- Pandora
This is obviously not an exhaustive list. Because regularly, new applications join the “Dynamic Island compatible” club. This is to give you an overview of what the feature is capable of. However, we will be sure to add new applications regularly.
