Apple is preparing its first headset mixing augmented reality and virtual reality. And if the firm does not communicate on the subject, the clues are more and more numerous. For a while, the names that Apple could give to its new operating system for the AR/VR headset have been circulating:RealityOSand xrOS. And now, these names are almost confirmed by the code of the Cupertino company.
At least that’s what is indicated by a recent article from our colleagues at MacRumours. These two names would have appeared on the code of an Apple application for Windows computers.
Leaked names
Currently, if a person wants to manage their Apple devices on a computer and they don't have a Mac, they install iTunes software. However, the Cupertino company is preparing a new Windows application to replace iTunes: Apple Devices. And it is in the code of the beta version of this application that references to RealityOS and xrOS would have been found.

Unfortunately, no further details. But if references to Apple's future AR/VR platform are present in the code of this application, it is probably because the firm will allow you to connect and manage your headset on a Windows PC.
A product that takes time to arrive
As a reminder, rumors had indicated that Apple's virtual reality and augmented reality headset would arrive in 2022. Unfortunately, that did not happen. And now, we are expecting a release in 2023. But according to a recent publication by analyst Ming Chi Kuo, the development of the headset is still behind schedule and as a result, a presentation this January would be unlikely.
Apple could instead present its AR/VR headset in the spring, give developers time to create apps for the platform, then market this headset a few months later. Moreover, regarding Apple's AR/VR platform, this would today be the Cupertino company's priority.
Apple is rumored to have committed significant resources to complete the operating system for its AR/VR headset. And this could even affect the development of other products, including iOS 17. Thus, the next versions of iOS and macOS could includefewer new features than expected.
If these rumors are true, it would show how important augmented reality is to Apple. Some predictions (including those from Mark Zuckerberg) indicate that within a few years, augmented reality glasses will replace smartphones.
