WhilemacOS Monterey 12.5.1 has recently been released, its publisher has also published a new version of Safari to be installed as quickly as possible to avoid potential attacks. The 15.6.1 version of the Apple firm's proprietary browser is in fact delivered with apatchwhich corrects a major security flaw, discovered by a cybersecurity researcher whose name has not been revealed.
This is located on the side ofWebKit, the Cupertino HTML rendering engine used by apps like Safari, Mail, macOS widgets, Steam or Yelp. When you open a link in an app via its built-in browser, it's also WebKit that runs the functionality most often. This is howiOS 15.6.1 received a similar update this week.
No surprise
With Safari 15.6.1, however, Apple does not offerno improvement in interface, design or options. We will therefore have to wait for this until Safari 16, the next major version of the platform probably planned for September and equipped with brand new features such as access codes or shared tab groups for working together remotely.
How to update to Safari 15.6.1?
To install Safari 15.6.1 today:
- open the menu
- chooseSystem Preferences
- click onSoftware update
As you will see, Apple will then offer you to download the latest version of macOS because Safari 15.6.1 is included. However, your Mac will need to be compatible, to check this, consultthe list of eligible models. It is not possible to update Safari from the Mac App Store at this time. Safari also does not seem to have been updated on iPhone and iPad; the fix is apparentlylimited to Macs.
We advise you to install Safari 15.6.1as soon as possibleto avoid possible theft of personal data, the WebKit flaw allowing anyone to take advantage of it to execute code without your consent. This can theoretically lead to the appearance of invasive advertisements, a Trojan horse or even ransomware that ignores the protections offered by your antivirus.
