Security of iMessage and Facetime exchanges noted in EFF report

Not a day goes by without
whether you receive a message via Facebook or in the Apple app or even
a FaceTime call. Since all these new tools are an integral part of
our daily life, the EFF for Electronic Frontier Foundation had the idea
to assess how secure they are.

After sifting through 36 different systems, these are finally
those of Apple iMessage and Facetime, which come first among the most
used. However, there is nothing to brag about, because several small
occupy first place:

For each system studied, the EFF asked itself 7 questions:

  • Are messages in transit encrypted?
  • Are communications encrypted so that the provider does not
    can't read?
  • Can we verify the identity of contacts?
  • Is conversation history safe if you obtain the
    identifiers?
  • Is the code open to independent review?
  • Is the security design of the system good?
    documented?
  • Has the code been verified?

This gives us the following table:

As we can see, Apple products do not achieve a
faultless by fulfilling only 5 of the 7 criteria set. The only ones to respond
in the affirmative to all the questions are: ChatSecure, CryptoCat,
Signal/Redphone, Silent Phone, Silent Text, and TextSecure.
