iPhone XS “too good” selfies corrected with iOS 12.1: bug details

Last month, many iPhone XS and XS Max users, as well as YouTuber Lewis Hilsenteger of the Unbox Therapy channel, pointed outa “problem” with selfiestaken with the front camera.

Note that the smart HDR photo algorithm would apply too much smoothing to the skin, which would erase details/defects.Apple will correct selfies deemed “too beautiful”. Explanations on this bug which annoys some users.

In hisiPhone XR review, the American site The Verge, mentions an interesting point. Apple willmodify the smart HDR algorithm under iOS 12.1, so that selfie photos keepmore details and smoothing of the skin is less aggressive.

According to The Verge, the smart HDR functionality of the new iPhones chosethe bad basic imagebefore applying HDR processing, for selfie photos. Instead of taking a sharp image, the smart HDR occasionally picked up a blurry photo.

This one was blurry because the front sensor doesn't have optical stabilization, so it takes blurry photos with the same shutter speed as the rear sensor. This had the effect of causingloss of detail, and it looked like aggressive smoothing in photos taken with the front camera.
