Survey result: “do you use Augmented Reality on iPhone/iPad?” …It’s meh!

Version 11 of iOS released in 2017 had a special flavor. In fact, it provided support for theaugmented reality and ARKitto compatible iPhones and iPads. For 2 years therefore, we have seen regular arrivalsappsetgames taking advantage of these technologieson iOS. Despite everything, developers still remain timid, with the number of apps taking advantage of augmented reality still limited.

However, the tech giants are involved: Google, Facebook, but also certain video game studios, likeNiantic(Pokémon Go,Harry Potter) orRovio Mobile(Angry Birds AR). The potential seems great. But what about use?

It was preciselythe subject of our latest survey.which aimed to find out if you use augmented reality on your iPhone/iPad, or not.

Here are the numerical results accompanied by an analysis, thanks to your comments:

The numbers: how many fans of augmented reality on iPhone among you?

The question was:“do you use augmented reality on your iPhone/iPad”. Four answers were offered: “I have tested, but I no longer use”, “I have never tested”, “Yes, sometimes”, “Yes, regularly”. And here is the distribution of the answers, after700 votes:

In the end,one user in two has testedtechnology, butno longer use it to this day.

Moreone user in three has never taken the test.

Finally, less than 2 in 10 users use augmented reality on their iPhone or iPad from time to time.

If we group the “Yes” and “No” answers into two large groups, this gives a clear breakdown:

So,87 %of users do not useno or no longer augmented reality.

Only13% of users use it but only 2% regularly!

Augmented reality, a technology still too young?

In the comments, you were able to enhance your answers. Wethank you in passing to all those who added a few lineson the subject, it is very useful beyond the raw figures.

We discover in particular that for those who use AR, it is rather a question ofenjoy in games, asPokémon GOor evenAngry Birds ARand a certain Kings of Bowling. But some apps take advantage of technology, likeIkea Store,Wanna Kicksor evenFlightradar24also attracted some of you.

Despite everything, overall, it appears from your comments that augmented reality on iPhone/iPad is notnot yet mature enough. She remainsimpressive, morelack of interestor sometimes malfunctions.

It will certainly be necessary to reach a few more years to see it really seduce the general public, we can in particular expect a lotof Google Maps in Augmented Reality!

And then as one of the readers points out, the smartphone is notnot necessarily the best platform to benefit from augmented reality. AR glasses would certainly be much more practical.

Some recent rumors suggest that Apple could soonoffer an augmented reality headset or glasses.

The iPhone/iPad are therefore certainly only a first step in the development of Augmented Reality at Apple. The platform serves as a laboratory, allowing developers to familiarize themselves with its possibilities, while allowing an undoubtedly rapid porting to the next technology which will immediately have an application offering, the key to success. No doubt about it, especially since we know thatTim Cook is in the camp of those who firmly believe in the potential of augmented reality, he says it very regularly!

Andbig thank youagain to those who took the time to respond to this survey!
