The CEO of Spotify, Daniel Ek, has not failed to make headlines since yesterday, given his very notable media outing.
In an interview with the Financial Times, the famous British media, he made the following remarks regarding Apple and Google: “If you want to be the referee, you can't also be the player.»
This interview took place in a particular context. Indeed, the United Kingdom is currently in the process of developing a Digital Markets Bill (DMCC). The latter is similar tothose initiated recently by the European Union, namely the DMA and the DCA. As a reminder, one of the main objectives of these texts is tolimit the economic domination of large digital platforms.
A control “insane»
The control exercised by the Californian firms Apple and Google over the digital markets is increasingly strong, but increasingly criticized. Many voices are being raised to denounce this situation, including that of Daniel Ek.
In his interview with the Financial Times, the CEO of Spotify did not fail to share his dissatisfaction: “Not only do they dictate the rules, but they are also in direct competition with other downstream players.»
The 30% commissions still don't work
According to some estimates, Apple would receiveapproximately $1.2 billiononly thanks to Spotify subscribers. A huge shortfall for the streaming platform.
Spotify has also been in conflict with Apple for years on this subject, and has even filed a complaint with the EU. Daniel Ek would like to be able to offer his services to iOS users outside of the App Store, without such a high commission being charged by the apple company.
Spotify had also tried to sell audiobooks via external links directly from its application, but Apple then prevented it.
