The secrets of the new Space Black MacBook Pro

The big news in Apple's latest computers is of course the introduction of new chips. And obviously, when a new processor appears, it is immediately compared to others. Thus, it emerged thatthe new classic M3 is as powerful as the M2 Ultra, whilethe M3 Pro would be disappointing, and barely faster than the M2 Pro.

If from the inside, the new chips bring big changes in terms of performance, the external appearance has not really changed. The only new design feature concerns the new color of the “Space Black” finish.

It's more complicated than it seems

From the outside, it doesn't seem like a major challenge to offer a device in a new color, it's just paint, after all. Well, think again, because the fact that the MacBook Pro panel is made of anodized aluminumcomplicates things greatly. The black on this material generally marks very easily. And if Apple hadn't come up with an ingenious technique to achieve color, the computer would be covered in fingerprints in no time.

In order to shed some light on this subject, Kevin O'Reilly from the channeliFixitexplained to us how the Apple firm ultimately proceeded. In a video published on this subject, he reports that it is necessary “a lot of effort, trial and error to find a balance between process steps and colorants to achieve a consistent result.» Achieving this feat therefore required long periods of research and development in the laboratory.

But after a while, the Apple firm finally found a solution. The researchers realized that they “could etch the already rough anodized surface, making it more uneven. » So, by engraving the surface using a laser or machining process, it makes the surface irregular. These will allow light to be reflected from all sides, thus preventing part of the white light from reaching our eyes.

Despite all the efforts of the firm, the MacBook Pro in Space Black finishare still likely to score morethan the gray ones. But a cloth, and that's it!
