Test of the cable / microSD card reader for iPhone and iPad from Dodocool (19 euros with promo code -30%)

When
we chose an iPhone or an iPad with a quantity of storage
less than 64 GB, you can quickly find yourself stuck. Photos, apps,
games, and especially videos take up a lot of space on the device, so
less than making regular backups via wireless, Cloud, or cable
Lightning-USB, we find ourselves cleaning every week to take advantage of
new apps.

Fortunately, there are different solutions for full storage. We
I already consecrateda file, which presents
accessories like Lightning USB sticks, Wi-Fi hard drives or even
Lightning microSD card readers. It is precisely an accessory of this
last type that we were able to test recently, from the brand
Dodocool, a manufacturer offering various accessories for
iPhone and iPad, including charging cables (as
this one also tested in our columns
).

Special feature of the product, it is both acard reader
microSD
and acharging cable! Certified by
Apple (MFi) and announced as capable of storing and playing photos, music, video
and documents via a companion app, this Dodocool cable could be a
partner of choice for an iOS device that is a bit scarce in terms of gigabytes. Here in
pictures of what it's all about:

Out of the box and discovery

The cable comes in a very small box, which contains nothing else
as the accessory and a small instruction manual. It is 15 cm long and
offers a classic Lightning port on one end and a USB socket a little
special from the other. In fact, heconceals a socket allowing
to insert a microSD card
.

The connection is easy and once the microSD card is in place,
difficult to suspect its presence, the USB port looks like a male USB plug
completely classic. Moreover, the Mac or PC on which it is possible to
plugging in the cable also sees nothing but fire.

Note that as part of the test, the microSD card that was used is
a 2 GB Samsung model. Dodocool does not indicate a limit concerning the
microSD card storage, so you can use 32, 64 and 128 GB formats
without problem, to see if the largest capacities 512 GB and 1 TB are
also taken into account.

Finally, still on the subject of the USB end, we regret a rather
thick, which could be annoying in the case of connection to a USB hub, or to
a computer interface that does not leave too much space for its sockets
USB devices.

On the Lightning side, it's the same story, the connector is a little big, which
which will prevent the plug from plugging into an iPhone equipped with a case that is too
tightened on the device's Lightning jack. Damage.

Apart from this small regret, the whole thing seems solid, the connectors are
covered in metal and the connecting cable is braided and rather rigid.

Utilisation et application KisDisk

During the test, on the Mac, the cable and its microSD card are seen as a
classic removable disk. You can then drag files without having to do too much
pay attention to any folder tree. Are taken into account, the
following files and formats:

  • Audio : mp3, aac, aif, aiff, midi, m4a, wav
  • Vidéo : mp4, mov, rm, rmvb, m4v, flv, wmv, avi, wmv, 3gp, mpg, vob,
    swf
  • Image : bmp, jpg, gif, ico, tiff, png, cru, XBM
  • Document : pdf, word, excel, rtf, ppt, htm, html, txt, nombres, cwr,
    pages

The transfer time is quite good, it is not the fastest, but it
does not require you to wait 20 minutes for the transfer of a 720p movie.
Theoretically, speeds of 13 Mb/s for reading and 8 Mb/s for reading are announced.
writing on the computer, and 8 Mb/s reading and 6 Mb/s writing on
the iOS device.

All external storage solutions on iOS involve the use
of a specific application. So this is when you first connect the cable
containing the map on the iOS device, a window offers the download of
l’applicationKisDisk,
available for free on the App Store
. This will in fact serve as
data manager on the card, but also a reading platform
and viewing files.

The KisDisk app can also be used as a video player as well as a music player.
music. In our test, while this worked with an .mkv file,
yet not indicated in the official specifics, the .flac audio formats
and .alac unfortunately could not be opened. For photo display,
no problems to report for the KisDisk app viewer.

The app turns out to be completely satisfactory, very complete, and if you want to
pass, it allows you to send files to other more suitable apps and
specialized in iOS, such asVLCfor videos,
MusiCloudfor music orDocuments
for miscellaneous files. There remains an interface that is not necessarily very fun...

Apart from this, it should be noted that this Dodocool Lightning reader also serves
ofcharging cable, its small length does not make the procedure
not really practical, but for troubleshooting, it does the job very well.
Please note that, as is often the case with these cables, the
iTunes sync is not available
. The cable serves as memory
additional, charging cable, but no synchronization.

Conclusion

In the end, this micro SD card reader cable is very practical, easy to
use, efficient and rather complete.

It is not without its negative points, like the KisDisk application which is not
an ergonomic model as well as the fairly large USB and Lightning connectors and
which can cause some problems when faced with tight grips. Finally, it is
too bad the player doesn't play .alac and .flac audio files, however
rather common. But we'll catch up on .mkv for videos!

  • Good quality cable
  • Also serves as a charging cable
  • Discreet microSD card slot
  • Complete KisDisk app
  • Lit les MKV !

THE -

  • Slightly large connectors
  • No synchronization of iPhone or iPad possible with Mac
  • Rare bugs in the KisDisk app and austere interface
