TikTok faces serious accusations again

Certainly,TikTokis in the hot seat in the United States. We remember in particular that two years ago, the Chinese social networkwas accused of espionageby the government of Donald Trump and clearly threatened with total banishment on the spot. He ultimately narrowly escaped this sanction.

TikTok promises to rectify the situation

The problems remain very concrete for the platform across the Atlantic. ByteDance, its parent company, responded to the letter sent by nine senators who accused it of monitoring American citizens. In response, the company explains that some of its employees outside the United States may well access American users' information.

It specifies that “employees based in China who meet a certain number of internal security protocols” can consult this data, in particular videos and public comments.

But Shou Zi Chew, the CEO of TikTok, nevertheless wants to be reassuring by affirming that this information is not shared with the Chinese government and is subject to important cybersecurity measures. His statement clearly did not reassure the senators.

Thus, the elected Republican from Tennessee, Marsha Blackburn, was indignant: “This confirms that our fears about the CCP's influence in the company were well-founded. The Chinese-led company should have told the truth from the start, but it tried to shroud its work in secrecy».

To calm things down, TikTok now plans that the data in its application will be entirely controlled by servers of the American company Oracle, and that audits will be carried out by third parties. It remains to be seen whether this will be enough to convince American leaders.
