TSMC is working (well) on its 2nm technology for 2024

The war is on between Samsung and TSMC, the two companies intend to win the profitable market for chips made for iPhones. For the moment it is the Taiwanese group which holds the market, with chips engraved in 5 nm which have proven themselves. But now is the time for innovation.

Indeed, the South Korean Samsung hopes to win back the hearts of iPhones by offering an engraved chipin 3 nm in the second quarter of 2022.A projection presented by Apple itself in a report titled: “Samsung promises to overtake TSMC's chip business by 2022 and aims to win back Apple's chip business” difficult to make a clearer title.

Samsung vs TSMC who will team the iPhones of the future?

And this relationship between the brand and Apple seems to have brought to the forefront the technological struggle between Samsung and TSMC to become Apple's preferred partners over the coming years. It is only logical that a report from the Taiwanese company came to respond to Samsung's ambitions.

In this announcement, TSMC claims to have made major advances internally on the development of 2nm chips which could therefore arrive at the end of 2022 or the beginning of 2023, giving the Taiwanese group an advantage over its South Korean adversary.

To do this, the company presented a completely new process, different from FinFet, used until now - and which has largely served its time - TSMC intends to use a technology even different from that which Samsung is developing for its 3nm chips. The company therefore aims to move from nanowire to nanosheet, an advance which should make it possible to further reduce the leak rate.

With such technology, if it were to be perfected and reliable, TSMC would win the entire market without too much problem and major customers such as Apple or Qualcomm would sign directly with the Taiwanese.
