At the beginning of December 2023, we learned that unidentified governments were forcing Apple, under cover of American law, to communicate to them the content of Push notifications from iPhone users.
Senator Ron Wyden also sent a letter on this subject to the American Department of Justice, where he expressed the urgent needto repeal laws preventing transparency of this type of request. The subject of spying on push notifications from Apple smartphones is back on the table today, but with different protagonists this time.

Meta, Microsoft, and LinkedIn in the viewfinder
In a video posted on his channelYouTube, cybersecurity researcher Tommy Mysk shows how certain web giants deliberately violate the rules imposed by Apple in order to refine their advertising targeting. This time it's not about democratic governments, but companies likeTikTok,Facebook,Twitter, Bing or evenLinkedin. Tommy Mysk explains in his video how they hijack push notifications in order to collect user data.
The hypocrisy of confidentiality
In recent times, many troubling elements have reinforced the general distrust of large platforms. Among them in particular, the investigation by Joseph Cox of404 Media, which highlighted the offers of certain advertising agencies. The latter boasted of being ablespy on people through the microphone of their smartphones, in order to be able to listen to their conversations. This with the aim of theiroffer advertisements related to the products or services mentioned orally during their daily conversations.
Despite constant promises from web giants regarding privacy, it seems that the lure of profit is far too strongso that they decide to definitively stop secretly collecting as much data as possible. Apple remains, as a reminder, the only company not to have fallen into this trap. This is easily explained by the fact that its income does not come from ads, and our data is therefore not as interesting to it as other GAFAM. However, it is good to note that Google is the one making the most effort in this area, despite still having many shortcomings.
