A Twitter user shared his find on the blue bird social network: the featurehoverruns smoothly on theiPad Pro M1. In any case with his version12.9 inches, which is the largest. It was by going to the Settings app that the owner of the tablet realized this, as we can see in this video which seems to clearly prove the thing:
My (5th gen)#iPadPro12.9in M1 demonstrates#ApplePencilHover being viable for older models. Using the hover text feature, this video clearly shows that hover features should not be limited to#M2iPad pros. (I know other sources claimed that hover is software locked, sadly).pic.twitter.com/q7VAya0Z2I

We don't know if11-inch iPad Pro with M1 chipare also compatible, but since the software technologies that power the hover are also integrated into this device it is totally possible.
What is hovering?
Hovering is a very recent feature of iPadOS, released at the same time as the iPad Pro M2 at the end of 2022. Hovering allows you topreview contentby hovering your Apple Pencil over the tablet screen, but without touching it. Only the second generation Apple Pencil is compatible according to Apple data and it actually seems that the previous version does not support this tool.
As with the MacBook Pro Touch Bar, hovering isopen to developersvia a dedicated API which allows them to add the functionalities of their choice. For example, we have already seen hovering at work to obtain an overview of a watercolor, to magnify the dock icons, to know where its mine will land in Notes or even to trigger the playback of a video suggested by YouTube.
A good point to compensate
The arrival of hover on old iPad Pros is real good news for their buyers. This change, however, contrasts with other major drawbacks of the stylus, such as the fact that its first generation is now only compatible with the iPad 10 by investing ina dedicated adapter that costs ten euros.
To afford an Apple Pencil 2, the price originally set at 135 euros is now at149 euros. An increase which coincides with other price changes for iPhones, iPads and Macs that have occurred in recent weeks following overall inflation in the electronics sector.
