Future iPhones could be offered with a completely edge-to-edge screen, that is to say with an almost invisible space between the contour of the panel and the aluminum or stainless steel surround of the shell. This format, better known under the termborderlessacross the Atlantic, therefore offers a size/screen ratio theoretically reaching 100% – even if no manufacturer has ever really been able to impose such a value proposition on the market. We remember well theSharp Aquos Crystal, but it will have made the headlines more than convinced the general public.
Unsurprisingly, Apple would have tasked two of its Korean competitors with designing this future borderless mobile. More precisely, we are talking about Samsung Display and LG Display, which many have already seen at the helm of previous generation iPhone screens. Alongside these two giants, BOE Electronics is also often mentioned, but not today.
The end of metal also for the edges?
With this, the media at the origin of these leaks explains that Apple would also prepare a completely glass chassis, without aluminum or stainless steel slices therefore. These two materials currently equip the iPhone 14 andthe iPhone 14 Pro, but with a major disadvantage for the first: its friability.
Ice, however, is clearly not as flexible and will not withstand impacts better. But Apple has already been working with Corning for several years, with the brand providing Gorilla Glass technology that helps deal with drops or scratches. The system is clearly not invincible, but has already proven itself, including among Android manufacturers.
Furthermore, remember that iPhones are already relatively difficult to repair, so with a one-piece front (the front and back are already glass) there is no risk of remedying this…
It's not for now
To qualify, however, let us remember that Apple is therefore still far from potential commercialization here. We know that until one of its suppliers successfully passes all of its compliance procedures, very long quarters can pass. Furthermore, all the models evoking the iPhone 17 that we have recently discovered do not reveal the slightest borderless design.
