What demands?
Among what workers reproach management for, it is rumored thatbonuses promised by Foxconn would not have been paid. We know that the firm has a habit of attracting new recruits by promising large sums to be released after a certain time spent at the factory. It is also a way to convince team members who have left their position to turn back.
The premises affected by the strike, located atZhengzhou, currently host nearly two hundred thousand workers, the majority of whom are responsible for assembling iPhones. Nearly 70% of these mobiles are finalized by Hon Hai, according to the most recent figures. The components, for their part, come from several other subcontractors including TSMC for processors, Qualcomm for modems, Sony for photo sensors or evenSamsung and LG for screens.
COVID-19 held responsible
These troubles are also believed to be caused by the government’s “zero COVID” policy, which locks access to places potentially affected by the disease. Employees would therefore have preferred to return home to avoid finding themselves locked in the factory. And even on site, the restaurant would have closed its doors to avoid further contamination. It is difficult to know what the consequences will be on theproduction d’iPhonefor the moment, but stocks could run out in Apple Stores or at resellers.
