If like me, you have become
large consumers of the gigabytes included in expensive iDevices to the point of
sometimes you feel cramped with these hundreds of apps, photos, videos,
podcasts, or if you're simply tired of having to sync your
iPhone/iPod Touch/iPad to add a movie or the latest album
Moby, here is a test of theAirStashwhat
we had already mentioned in our columns here.
Presentation
This little device is nothing lessthan a USB stick, reader
SD card, equipped with WiFi and batteryannounced as being able to
last 5 hours of video playback.
By connecting your iDevice to the AirStash using WiFi, you can
access the files you put on the SD card. Il
will allow you to read images, office & PDF documents, music, videos
(in QuickTime format either .m4v, .mp4 or .mov in h264 format) and even play it
playlists! The admitted capacity is that of the SDHCs, i.e.
32Go.
Utilisation
It is possible to connect to several people (advertised up to 8!) on the same
AirStash and watch a different video on each device. The battery
recharges in 2 hours on a sufficiently powered USB port or as I did,
into the iPhone's power jack. It is possible to leave the network
open or lock it using a WEP key.
Until recently, after turning on the AirStash and connecting to it in
Settings > WiFi, you simply had to go to Safari at the address
airstash.net and we found its files.
Recently,an app is available(ici
on the App Store). It still allows you to read your files but
adds the possibility of resuming or stopping reading
from a video. This app also allows you to transfer your
photos to the AirStash to free up memory.
Conclusion
In conclusion, the AirStash is a great little companion for our precious ones, it
will allow you to take immediately readable content from a friend if at the right
format. It remains expensive but it is currently the only solution to have more
space via external support, but not for long!

Positive points:
- allows you to have more capacity on an interchangeable support
- allows media sharing (with recording for photos for example
but just playing for videos) - upgradeable (1.0.1 currently)
- free apps
Negative points:
- delivery only USA & Canada
- no possibility to delete, move, rename files directly
from an iDevice - no support for DivX, Xvid, in containers such as .avi or .mkv
(let's hope the app evolves and allows this one day) - price: US$99 without SD + shipping (and plus customs in my case)
