During hiskeynote last tuesday, Apple has insisted that its new iPhones can now shoot and edit video in ProRes format.
But what is ProRes? This is an in-house compression algorithm, supporting resolution up to 8K. It is recognized among video professionals by the fact that, even if the compression is not lossless, the fidelity is there, particularly in terms of colors.
Being able to film and edit in ProRes is therefore a characteristic of connoisseurs. It's hard to imagine iPhone users filming in ProRes 4K every day (unless you exceptionally want a top-level production for your son's birthday). Especially since the format supports very large video files. This would also be why Apple does not allow owners of iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max with only 128 GB to benefit from it.
Indeed, as indicated on the technical sheet of the two devices, ProRes 4K is not availableonly from 256 GB storage capacity for the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max. In 128 GB, it is only possible to film ProRes at 30 fps and 1080p.

Please note that it is therefore only the highest resolution (4K) in ProRes which is reserved for the iPhone 13 Pro and 13 Pro Max with 256, 512 or 1 TB of storage. ProRes is available on the iPhone 13 Pro/Pro Max with 128 GB, but limited to a resolution of 1080p and 30 frames per second.
With this, Apple also wants to push buyers to turn to more stocked storage capacities of course. Because as we saw inour price comparison of the new generation of iPhone compared to the old one, the Californian firm is not going with the back of the spoon in terms of extra euros for the higher capacities of its iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max…
