Apple x Android: the silent encrypted revolution is brewing

Last July, we announced to you thatSFR became the first French operator to adopt RCS on iPhone, in a beta of iOS 18. This technology, already well established on Android, promises richer exchanges between the two ecosystems. It allows Android users toenjoy the same features as iMessage, or even more. A new breakthrough could also soon be added to the equation. It concerns a crucial aspect of our communications: security.

Stronger encryption in sight

The GSMA, the organization that manages the RCS standard, has just made an important announcement. She is working on the implementation ofend-to-end encryption for RCS messages between iPhone and Android. This progress marks a major turning point in the security of exchanges between the two ecosystems.

As a reminder, you already benefit from end-to-end encrypted exchanges when you communicate via iMessage. Currently, RCS messages between iPhone and Android do not benefit from this level of protection. Only some services like Google Messages offer it by default.

A complex implementation

The implementation of this reinforced encryption promises to be atechnical challenge. The GSMA will have to coordinate the efforts of different actors: smartphone manufacturers, application developersand operators. No precise timetable has also been communicated.

This new feature brings a new level of confidentiality to exchanges between iPhone and Android, after years of conflict due to Apple's refusal to open iMessage to Android users. After years of refusing integration, Apple finally agreed. As a reminder, it is not because of the European Union, butbecause of an actor whose origin you probably don't suspect.
