Apple expands production of recent iPhones from China to India

Currently, all new iPhones in the 2018 lineup are assembled in China. But it appears that Apple wants to expand iPhone production outside of China.

According to a new report from Reuters, Apple officials will meet with Indian government officials to discussproduce recent iPhones from the “iPhone X range” in India.

Currently, the only iPhones produced in India are the iPhone SE and iPhone 6s, which are assembled by Wistron. However, the production of more recent models would beentrusted to the main assembler, Foxconn.

The latter already has production lines in India for other products. The Taiwanese firm plans to invest $356 million to convert themin iPhone production lines.

Several reasons can explain this decision to produce recent iPhones in India. We are thinking in particular of apotential increase in taxeson products imported from China and sold in the United States.

The Cupertino company is also experiencing problems with the Indian market and in particular acontinued decline in iPhone sales. This production of recent iPhones in India could also be part of a strategy to return to growth in India.

At the same time, it would also help Apple meet a 30% local production requirement for permission to open Apple Stores in India.
