Sell less, but more expensive: the magic formula from Apple

  • Famous analyst Ming-Chi Kuo published a special investigation into Apple
  • According to him, the firm could become the largest manufacturer of mobile phones in the world
  • To arrive at this conclusion, the analyst studies several criteria

Ming-Chi Kuo published a report yesterday on the Medium platform, concerning the possibility for Apple to overtake Samsung and thus become the largest smartphone brand in the world.

According to what criteria?

To establish this forecast, the analyst based himself on the share price as well as the number of smartphones sold by the two firms since the start of the year. And it looks bad for Samsung…

And for good reason, the company which employs more than 320,000 people around the world saw its sales fall from the start of 2023. As a reminder, and according to a study carried out by Canalys, 1.2 billion mobile phones were sold across the world last year. 2022 is thus qualified asbad year for the smartphone market. The Apple firm alone sold 232 million units(19% market share), against 257 million(22% market share)for Samsung. Compared to the first quarter2023, Samsung stagnates at 22%. The Korean company was overtaken by Apple. The American has in factgained 3 pointsand came close to his historic adversary, reaching21% market share over the period. In a fierce battle, in the second quarter, Samsung regained the upper hand. Ultimately, it is unlikely that the Apple company will overtake the Korean giant in terms of smartphone sales in 2023.

Did Ming-Chi Kuo make a mistake?

By reading the survey, we can read that Apple could total more than 225 million sales in 2023. With this figure, the Cupertino company could overtake Samsung over the entire year. This estimate seems curious, given that the Korean giant risks making many more sales if we rely on the history in this area and the announced objectives.

However, as explained above, the analyst bases his investigation not only on the number of sales, but also on the share prices of the two companies. Taking this last point into account, we quickly understand why the prediction favors Apple: the average price of iPhone sales was surely higher than the average price of Samsung mobile sales. Thus, 100 million iPhones sold generate a much greater turnover than 100 million smartphones sold by Samsung... Furthermore, the iPhone 14 Pro Max could constitutea sales record in 2023. And the iPhone 15s coulddrive the average price of the iPhone even higher.
