While Elon Musk's controversies continue, alternatives to his social network X (former Twitter) are becoming more and more numerous. And in addition to Mastodon and Threads, we can now count the Bluesky platform among these alternatives. The project is not new, but until now it was in the testing phase and was only accessible to people who have an invitation. That changes this week as Bluesky is finallyaccessible to everyone, without invitation.
This is an important step for this decentralized alternative to X.“Bluesky is building an open social network where everyone can contribute, while providing an easy-to-use experience for users. Over the past year, we've used invite codes to help us manage growth while building features like moderation tools, custom feeds, and more. Now we are ready to welcome everyone”, we can read on the ad.
And for the moment, the platform is off to a good start. One day after announcing its opening, Bluesky has already recorded more than a million new registrations. And currently, it already has more than 4 million users (includingiPhon.fr account that you can follow). Obviously, Bluesky is still far from competing with X or even Threads, in terms of usage. But in any case, the new platform has enormous potential, and it has already attracted some celebrities.
A project financed by
It is important to note that the Bluesky project was able to see the light of day, thanks to X, which was called Twitter at the time. In 2021, the platform was not yet owned by Elon Musk and was led by former CEO Jack Dorsey. The latter announced the funding of Bluesky, with the aim of creating a sort of decentralized version.
But although the project was funded by the former Twitter, the microblogging platform has no control over it.“The public benefit part of our structure gives us the freedom to allocate our resources to our mission without the obligation to return money to shareholders. The company is owned by the team itself, with no majority stake held by Twitter”, explained Bluesky, in a publication, in 2022.
The difference between X and Bluesky
In any case, if Bluesky has many similarities with the old Twitter, it differentiates itself thanks to its decentralized structure. Bluesky is based on the “AT” protocol and therefore its users have the ability to interact with users of other apps that use the same protocol.
