Clubhouse: the new popular social app shows its flaws

If you don't know Clubhouse yet, know that it is a service launched last year allowing users to communicate not in the form of text messages, but in audio. So, in Clubhouse, you can join an audio chatroom and start chatting with members already there.

According to the latest data from the analytics company App Annie and its estimates, Clubhouse would have reached3.5 million downloads as of February 1, 2021, before going up to8.1 million as of February 16.

This rapid rise in the number of downloads can in fact be attributed to the recent presence on Clubhouse of several personalities, including Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg. Both were in fact at one point present in a chat room, and any other user could then communicate with one or the other.

Except that for the moment, the application is not open to everyone, being still in the testing phase. You must have an invitation sent by a user of the service to register. And the creators of Clubhouse have every interest in remaining patient and continuing to work on their service before expanding its use. Because in terms of security, everything does not yet seem to be in place.

Listening

Over the past weekend, a hacker based in China reportedly managed to record audio from several Clubhouse rooms. Additionally, Clubhouse would transmit user and room identifiers unencrypted to the server that underpins its China-based operation.

Alex Stamos, former high-ranking officer at Facebook and major IT security specialist, has already issued several alerts on Twitter about Clubhouse and this use of Chinese servers. He does not recommend the application for conversations including sensitive information, for the moment.

Clubhouse provided us with the following statement promising changes. We found that the use of Shanghai-based Agora is fundamental to the function of the app and building logical and technical controls between the US and PRC infrastructure will be extremely complicated.pic.twitter.com/K27SmO4PtG

Clubhouse has already announced that it is working on several data security improvements. The challenge will be to see if Twitter and/or Facebook will quickly be able to offer an alternative that presents itself as more attractive in terms of security and privacy in the eyes of users. The two giants are currently working to develop a Clubhouse-style audio chat functionality for their respective platforms.

Theprivacy and security of user databeing one of the major tech topics in 2021, the theme will obviously be central for Clubhouse in the months to come. It should even constitute an essential pillar for its long-term success.
