iOS 16 release date: everything you need to know about the betas and the final version

In June 2022, Apple presented version 16 of its iOS operating system. For the occasion, we were also able to discoverall its new features like Face ID in landscape mode or Camera Continuity. The developer, however, remained quite vague as to the precise release date of the software, only giving us a “this fall” although loaded with meaning. Indeed, based on the history of the Apple firm, we see that these two words are not the first of their kind...

Last year, Apple gave us the same clue regarding the release date of iOS 15. However, this version finally arrived - as often - on the Monday following the September 2021 keynote during which the iPhone 13 and its three other versions. This therefore allows us easily to assume that iOS 16 will also be deployed there at the beginning of the week following the presentation of the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Pro. According to the most recent information (we are talking here about data provided by Max Weinbach), the conference which will announce them could be organized on September 7. With therefore, in theory,iOS 16 for everyone on September 12 or 13.

Quid des retards ?

If you follow the news from Tim Cook's firm, you are probably also aware that the release date of some of its operating systems looks set to be slowed down. This is not the first time that such problems have been reported: already in 2020, macOS Big Sur was released in November while the iPhone 12 was released in October. Blame it on the pandemicCOVID-19, except that its effects are still being felt.

Regarding the reasons given to justify a delay of iPadOS 16 of macOS Ventura, which could therefore not be present during the next keynote, it would be Stage Manager here that is the culprit. Fortunately, the release date of iOS 16 is not affected by this incident, which would therefore be limited to computers and tablets, the only ones to be entitled to this window management tool for the moment.

While waiting to be able to try iOS 16 in final version, you have the possibility to test advanced versions. Here too, we do not yet know the release date of therelease candidateswhich will be the last betas before the public version. However, these are the ones that should be delivered withall the features announced by Apple in June 2022.

However, you can wait with the betas already available, which are already well stocked. Each iOS 16 beta release date isspaced two weeks apartapproximately, but it is a range which can vary depending on the time it takes the testers and the editor to report and then correct the bugs. Moreover, it is important to remember that you take the serious risk of encountering them when you go into beta. Apple therefore advises only touching these editions with knowledge of the facts and especially not on an iPhone that you use to communicate with your family or colleagues. At best, you'll need a dedicated iPhone. At worst, an emulator.

There are currently two types of beta versions for iOS 16. The first brings together those which are deployed from the start but intended fordevelopers only. Their access is paid and restricted to professionals, because it is these versions which are victims of the greatest number of technical incidents. As for the second, these are the public beta versions which this time are intended for all curious (but cautious) users and which generally arrive a few hours or a few days after the release date of iOS 16 in developer beta.

Compatibility

Last advice. If you don't want to miss the release date of iOS 16 in final version, make sure your hardware is compatible first. Otherwise, you may have to go through other necessary updates, which takes more time.
