2nd quarter 2018: impressive results for Apple driven by a top iPhone

During the first three months of the year, Apple signed itsbest quarter at the start of the yearsince its creation in terms of turnover and income. This is thanks to good iPhone sales, but also thanks to the various services and the famous “Others” category. This includes the Apple Watch, iPod, Apple TV, Beats accessories and AirPods.

THEsecond quarter resultsof 2018, have just fallen, and it is like the first withimpressive results. Announcing the results is a particularly important exercise, since they reflect to a certain extent the success or name of certain products.

So here's an overview of Apple's latest quarterly results, the charts and what to remember:

Apple's best second quarter

Apple's turnover reached53.3 billiondollars in the second quarter of 2018, an increase of17 %compared to the same quarter last year. Net revenues reached11.5 billionthe dollars.

This is thebest second trimesterof a calendar year since the creation of the apple firm. Comparatively, at the same period last year, turnover was54.4 billiondollars with net income of8.7 billion.

The iPhone X continues to sell well

During the second quarter of 2018, Apple sold41,3 millions d’iPhone, an almost identical figure compared to last year for the same period, during which Apple sold41 millions d’iPhone, which represents a1% increase.

During the second quarter of 2018, Tim Cook claims thatiPhone X remained the most popular model, with a satisfaction rate of98 %.

Sales of iPhone X and iPhone 8 allow Apple to record a20% increase in revenuegenerated by smartphones at Apple. Thanks in part to the higher price of the iPhone X.

The latter makes it possible to maintain a fairly high average price of the iPhone of around724 dollars. Compared to the same period last year, the average iPhone price was606 dollars.

The iPad

Apple's tablet recorded more or less the same figures as last year, since the Apple firm sold11,6 millions d’iPad, or aincrease of 1%and 0.2 million more units compared to the same period last year, which was11.4 million iPads sold.

Apple says more than half of iPad sales in the last quarter were attributed to new users, with a customer satisfaction rating of 94%. The new iPad, unveiled in March 2018, probably allowed Apple to stabilize iPad sales.

At the same time, Apple could unveil new iPad Pros at the next iPhone 2018 conference, which would incorporate the characteristics of the iPhone for facial recognition.

The Mac is losing speed

Regarding the Mac, the Cupertino company sold3.7 million Macs, or adrop of 13%compared to last year at the same period, when Apple sold 4.3 million units.

60% of Mac purchases during the 2nd quarter were made by new users.

The Apple Watch and AirPods are a hit

The so-called “Other” product category at Apple, which includes the Apple Watch, iPod, Apple TV, HomePod, Beats accessories and AirPods, continues tomake a box. The turnover is increasing to reach3.74 billion, compared to 2.74 at the same period last year, i.e. an37% increase.

Tim Cook indicated that AirPods continue tosell out as fast as they can make them.

“Services” reaches a new record

Apple's “Services” category, which includes Apple Pay, but also the App Store, iTunes and Apple Music, recorded revenue inincrease of 31%with$9.55 billionin revenue, much better than the 7.27 billion last year at the same period. This is theApple's best quarter for the “Services” category.

Tim Cook announces that the Apple Music service hasexceeded 50 million subscribers, and that the music streaming service's revenues increased by 50% compared to the previous quarter.

The number ofApple Pay transactions tripledcompared to last year, signaling increased adoption of Apple Pay.

The Apple CEO also announces that new services will arrive “soon”. We imagine that one of them is a video content subscription service.

But still

Concerning the distribution of income between its different products and services, the iPhone remains the most profitable with56% of total revenuegenerated by the Apple firm, followed by 18% for “Services” and 10% linked to Mac sales. Just behind, the 9% for the iPad and the 7% for the “Other” category bring up the rear.

The Californian company records aincrease in revenues in all countrieswhere it is present, and in particular in its historic market, as well as in China. Precisely, it records a growth in its revenues compared to last year at the same period, of20% in the US, 19% in China, 16% in the rest of Asia,14% in Europeand 7% in Japan.

In summary, the quarterly results are excellent for Apple, which is achieving itsbest second quarter at the start of the year since its creationthanks in particular to sales generated by the iPhone, as well as its increasingly profitable “Services” and “Other” categories.

This is therefore an exceptional year for Apple, with arecord first and second quarter. We hope that the third quarter will be just as good.
