Epic Games challenges Apple with a 12% commission on its Store

Epic Games has just dealt a major blow to the App Store. During its annual conference, which was held this Wednesday, the company announced the arrival ofits own app storeon iOS. According to the North Carolina firm, the Epic Games Store, which is already present on computers, should arrive on iOS and Android smartphones“in the coming months.”

This announcement, however, is anything but a surprise, Epic Games having repeatedly promised that such an application store would arrive. Since the beginning of March, developers have had the legal right to compete with the App Store on iOS, without the Apple brand being able to do anything to prevent them.

This change in the law within the European Union, permittedby the adoption of the DMA, should greatly change the face of our iPhones, with third-party application stores. The arrival of this competition shouldencourage a price war, at least that's what Europe hopes, which would like to see developers earn a little better living, with lower commissions, and lower prices for users.

The commission, the sinews of war

Because one thing is certain, the opening of application stores to competition will make it possible to break the historic 30% commission. The latter was taken by Apple for years, without developers having other payment solutions on hand.

It is this same commission which launched the legal war of the last 4 years between Apple and Epic Games. Set at 30% by Apple on the App Store since the launch of the latter, Epic Games has just announced in its annual conference thatthe Epic Games Store commission would only be 12%.

With such an announcement, the video game group, publisher of the very popular Fortnite, hopes to rally other developers to its cause and swell the ranks of its application store. The App Store does not intend to enter this price war, at least not for the moment, and Apple's service is instead banking on its reputation as well as its ease of access for all people who use an iPhone.
