Apple released iOS 14.8 and iPadOS 14.8 last night, a few days before the release of iOS and iPadOS 15. Why offer a new update for the current major version of iOS, when the news would arrive in about a week ?
Quite simplyto stop Pegasus spyware from working ASAP. Indeed, as reported by the New York Times, Apple has with these two updates in 14.8 closed any vulnerability allowing Pegasus to penetrate and master an iPhone or an iPad to extract any sensitive information.
Moreover, in the support page for today's updates, Apple specifies:
“Processing a maliciously crafted PDF may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.” et “Processing maliciously crafted web content may lead to arbitrary code execution. Apple is aware of a report that this issue may have been actively exploited.”
Translation :“Using a PDF containing malware could allow code execution. Apple knows that this flaw has already been widely exploited.” and “Loading web content containing malware could enable code execution. Apple knows that this flaw has already been widely exploited.”
We initially thought that iOS 14.7.1 already corrected the situation and allowed iOS and iPadOS to protect against Pegasus spyware, without being certain. But it would indeed be these new versions of Apple's mobile OS which would, we hope, definitively put the malware out of harm's way.
Needless to say, we advise everyone to update their iPhone or iPad.
