For once, Uncle Sam's main federal judicial police service is warning Internet users. This time, however, it is notabout a popular app, but indeed with regard to a device that sits in the living room of many French people: theirtelevision.
In fact, today, most models sold in supermarkets or in brands such as Darty or Boulanger are now equipped with an operating system that makes them communicative. We thus speak ofsmart TV, offering applications like Netflix or Spotify on the big screen.
Danger and solution
According to the FBI, the risks when using this type of system are simple. Like any machine that uses the Internet, malicious computer scientists can use aflawof the OS to access your sensitive data, or worse, trigger certain components such as the camera or the microphone, and therefore spy on you discreetly.
The concern is far from new: security breaches have always existed, even on dongles like the Google Chromecast or the Amazon Fire TV Stick. These tools allow you to transform any panel equipped with an HDMI port into a connected television, like what the box offersApple TV.
To reduce the risk of such inconvenience, the procedure to follow is as follows:
- Check that your smart TV is up to date
- Consult the software's privacy policy - in this case, at Apple, the subject seems well mastered–
- Hide the lens with a piece of black tape when you're not using it.
- Change your passwords regularly
- Turn off the device rather than putting it to sleep
