Google reportedly paid $18 billion for its place on Apple products

If Google's search engine is so popular, it is partly thanks to the agreements that the firm makes with Apple, Mozilla, and others so that this search engine is offered by default. In other words, Google pays Apple to make Google Search the default search engine on your iPhone. And today, these agreements are being scrutinized by the American courts, as part of a trial between Google and the United States government.

While the lawsuit is still ongoing, the New York Times published an article revealing that in 2021, Google would have paid a total of $18 billion to Apple. We already knew that Google's payments to Apple are in the billions of dollars. But the article allows us to have a precise idea.

Furthermore, these large payments would not only allow Google to be offered by default to Apple users. Indeed, Apple has already studied alternatives to using Google Search. The Cupertino company has already considered building its own search engine, or buying Bing. But these projects would not have been carried out because of the competitiveness of Google Search, but also because it would put an end to the multibillion-dollar payments.

Google worried?

In any case, while paying billions of dollars to Apple, Google would have been worried by the Cupertino company's projects in the field of search. For example, Google was reportedly concerned about the development of the Spotlight feature on the iPhone. In addition to encouraging iPhone users to use Chrome instead of Safari, Google is also reportedly exploring how it could exploit theEuropean legislation on digital marketsto counter Apple.

As a reminder, this legislation aims to better regulate tech giants. And this could force Apple to authorize third-party application stores as well assideloading(direct installation of applications, without going through a store) on the iPhone.
