1981: when Singapore was only sixteen years old, Cupertino set up its first factory there. Seventy-two employees were then responsible for manufacturing the Apple II, one of the very first personal computers to be truly produced on a large scale and for everyone. Since then, the manufacturer's establishment in the region has created 3,500 jobs, not counting 55,000 indirect jobs via the iOS apps industry.
On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of its presence in the country, the company took the opportunity to reveal some juicy details about its history through its CEO. Tim Cook was once again invited on the showMuttons In The Morning, presented on local radio Mediacorp CLASS 95. He had in fact already answered the various questions from the hosts, almost two years earlier.

During this week's interview,to be found on video at this address, Tim Cook looked back on his first arrival in Singapore in 1998. Having just been hired by Apple, he was then given the task of monitoring the iMac G3 production line. Under this name hides in reality the very first edition of the one which now embeds a proprietary M1 processor, but at the time with a rounded and translucent shell which will make it famous.
As for his first computer, it was also the Apple II. Powered by a MOS Technology 6502 chip clocked at 1 MHz, this model included 4 KB of RAM expandable up to 64 KB. The ROM, for its part, reached 8 KB but supported four more. Finally, the screen could only display 24×40 characters and in only six colors: the bare minimum.
